🎬 SINNERS Movie Review — Symbolism, Soul, and Slight Letdowns

Hey dudes and dudettes! Hope your day is going as sublime as your face😁💕 So I recently watched SINNERS — and whew, it took me on a ride. 🎥💥 I was engaged, emotionally invested, and rooting for characters I barely got to know, which is both peculiar and the mystery of this movie.

Let’s break it all down, shall we? 💋

🎸 The Story Begins…

The movie opens with Sammy aka “Preacher Boy” walking into his father’s church bloodied, battered, and carrying a beat-up guitar. Already dramatic. Already symbolic. And honestly? It sets the tone that something deep, tragic, and spiritual just happened. We’re thrown into a flashback loop from here — and this is where things really start to unfold.

🖤 Meet the Smoke & Stack Brothers

Elijah (Smoke) and Elias (Stack) are twin brothers trying to open a juke joint — a brilliant idea, especially during a time when Black-owned businesses were rare lifelines in a racially oppressive era. That historical layering gave the movie a lot of depth — plus shoutout to the inclusion of Asian-American characters!

I appreciated that context of intersectional struggle, however blacks did have it a lot worst because of how the odds were stacked against Black people back then.

Where the plot really lost a bit of direction was the storytelling. I was here for the world-building… but not everything connected the way it could’ve. It felt like we were almost getting to something powerful, but just not quite there. 😩

😬 The Relationships… Were Messy

Stack runs into Mary — which should’ve been a sweet reconnection, right? But instead, it was just awkward and underwhelming. Missed opportunity! Then there’s Annie and Smoke, who are grieving the loss of a child… but instead of healing, they spiral into witchcraft and intimacy that felt misplaced.

As a woman of faith 🙏🏾, I don’t align with those spiritual choices, and while I understandcreative storytelling, I also think it’s important to stay spiritually discerning when watching movies like this. That said, awareness is power — and I was still invested.

🧛🏾 Vampires?! Plot Twist… But Not in a Good Way

So… this is where the movie could’ve gone legendary, but instead gave us a predictable vampire twist. I wanted Smoke and Stack to be vampire hunters, not just victims. Imagine the creativity they could’ve explored! Sammy’s could've had powers with his guitar playing, and Annie could’ve had visions, and Remmick could’ve been this larger-than-life villainthreatening to unleash chaos. The potential was there — but they played it too safe.

💔 Loss After Loss

Characters dropped like flies — Grace and Bo, Annie, Delta Slim — and although those moments were powerful, it just felt like there was no true bittersweet redemption. Everyone sacrificed so much and didn’t really get the peace they deserved. They needed closure.

🌞 Final Scenes & Legacy

The final scene with Sammy as an old blues legend was touching. It gave that full-circle feeling, but again — it felt like a whisper of a stronger ending that could’ve been. Seeing Stack and Mary visit him was cool, but I wanted something more symbolic… maybe Sammy passing the guitar down to a new generation of vampire hunters or slayers?

💭 Final Thoughts

All in all, SINNERS had me watching the screen like 👀 the entire time. But it left me wanting more. More answers. More direction. More boldness in the storytelling.

Rating: 8/10. It’s got drama, soul, and style — but it could’ve been iconic if it leaned deeper into originality and tied up its loose ends. Still, it’s worth the watch, and if you’re into Southern Gothic vibes, jazzy undertones, and vampire chaos, you’ll totally get a thrill. 🖤🎷🩸
